Nemesis of her life-A short story

It was around the time of Diwali, the festival of lights. Listening to her daily playlist of retro 90s songs in her car, Nikita reminisced how she used to be. A little ambitious girl loitering around her house, flying paper rockets and pestering her mom.’I want to be an astronaut ‘ she said.

At last, this time of the year she experienced mixed emotions, sad because she won’t be home this Diwali but glad because she was going to achieve her goal. Setting aside all the restraints that bounded her to her village, she was about to fly both literally and metaphorically.

She jolted as reality hit because of the daily ruckus on the roads. Red light, clearly a sign for stop; she felt a certain realisation and retrospected if she should consider going but now she couldn’t give up. On a mission of two years, she was going to miss her family for sure.

That day the rocket soared high, Nikita the adrenaline junkie felt the best she could have ever felt in her life. But little did she know that her life, a bubble of happiness and joy would burst like a rocket cracker. Unlike the latter which is a vision of glitter and sparkle, this one dispelled unhappiness and gloom in her family. The thing she was most passionate about becoming the nemesis of her life.
